Categories and boundaries in Sámi exhibitions
2019
This article examines the construction of ethnicity in the permanent exhibitions of two Sami museums: Siida, the National Museum of the Finnish Sami and a Nature Centre of Metsahallitus, and ajtte, the Swedish Mountain and Sami Museum. The aim of the article is to find out how ethnic categories and boundaries are created by the exhibitions, and how the museum presentations relate to contemporary public discussions about Sami ethnicity. The presentations are analysed within the framework of discourse analysis. The findings suggest that the two museums, with a few possible exceptions, tend to produce a clear and stable ethnic boundary between the Sami and other ethnicities. Like the Sami ethn…
“Narrative Museums” and Curators’ Rights: The Protection of a Museum Exhibition and Its Scenario under Polish Law
2020
Since at least the 1990s, museums have expanded to cover a variety of societal functions, often enabling inclusive and participatory spaces for critical dialogue about the past and the future, and bridging together various narratives and cultural experiences, contributing to social cohesion and reconciliation. The new functions of museums, involving novel technological forms of display and communication, pose several legal questions concerning the management of such institutions, their resources, and exhibitions, including issues of copyright and other intellectual property rights. While referring to a recent case concerning an alleged infringement of the moral rights of the authors of the …
"Mais... je ne visite pas!". Une approche ethnographique de l'usage faible des œuvres
2013
Some photographic exhibitions are nowadays set outdoors in order to popularize art. Through a case study, this article examines the "weak use of images" as it is practised in public places, by passers-by who do not identify art pieces as such, and do not consider themselves as visitors. Their relation to art pieces, in this context, is built on an apparent paradox (they relate and at the same time do not relate to the pieces), and constitutes the minor mode of situations and observed interactions (this relation does not organise or structure the latter).
Antonin Proust, member of parliament, minister of fine arts, protector and defender of arts
2017
Antonin Proust (1832-1905), political figure, friend of the artists, historian, critic and salonnier, played an important political and cultural part. The life of this liberal republican is a plea for the protection of arts in the service of the Republic. He connects economic structure with artistic institutions and constantly advocates the useful arts. His aim is economic: to train artists in the service of the industry. He creates art schools and encourages the introduction of design at school. As budget rapporteur, he supports the protection and the development of arts. The unification of the arts which he advocates results in the creation of the ministry of the Arts. Advocate of the her…
Más allá del museo. Nuevos escenarios para la exposición
2018
[EN] Exhibition's stage has become a changing exercise over time, linked to a way of thinking historically the work. There are new museographic responses born of the participation of artists, architects and designers, and the role of the curator who, at times, transforms his role as theoretician in artist. Following this evolutionary dynamic, the exhibition has thus forged an almost independent identity of the museum itself. The meaning of the work in the place develops a new grammar that turns the exhibition into a work of art and also opens a debate around its current role
